Overview

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and weight. The procedure simultaneously lifts and reshapes the breast, producing a smaller, firmer, and more proportionate result. For many patients, it is among the most functionally life-changing procedures in plastic surgery — relieving chronic physical discomfort that interferes with daily activity, exercise, and quality of life.

Because large, heavy breasts can cause documented physical harm — including cervical spine problems, shoulder impingement from bra strap pressure, and skin breakdown in the breast fold — breast reduction is frequently covered by health insurance when medical necessity is properly documented. Our team assists patients in navigating the insurance process.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned at an appropriate height. The result is a breast that looks proportionate, feels lighter, and allows patients to exercise and move without discomfort.

The MPSG Difference

Breast Reduction Technique

Dr. Aker selects the incision pattern based on the amount of tissue to be removed and your anatomy. The most common techniques are the lollipop (vertical) pattern — a periareolar incision plus a vertical incision to the breast fold, suitable for moderate reductions — and the anchor (inverted-T) pattern, which adds a horizontal incision along the breast fold for larger reductions where more skin removal is needed.

In all techniques, the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a natural, youthful height. Dr. Aker uses nipple-sparing techniques designed to preserve sensation and, when possible, breastfeeding potential. All excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed and the breast is reshaped in a single-stage procedure.

Candidacy

Who Is a Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Ideal candidates are in good general health, at or near a stable weight, and free of nicotine. If insurance coverage is a goal, Dr. Aker will ensure the consultation documents the clinical findings needed to support your claim. Breast reduction may be appropriate for patients who experience any of the following:

  • Chronic neck pain, upper or lower back pain attributable to breast weight
  • Shoulder grooving and pain from bra strap pressure
  • Skin rashes, infections, or irritation beneath the breast fold
  • Postural problems caused by the forward weight of the breasts
  • Difficulty exercising, running, or participating in physical activity
  • Difficulty finding clothing that fits properly
  • Psychological distress or self-consciousness related to breast size

Breast Reduction Recovery Timeline

Recovery from breast reduction is well tolerated by most patients. Here is a general timeline:

  • First week: rest and limited arm movement; a surgical bra provides support and compression
  • Return to work: light desk work within 1–2 weeks for most patients
  • Supportive bra: worn continuously for approximately 6 weeks; underwire bras reintroduced after clearance
  • Exercise: light walking encouraged early; upper body exercise and strenuous activity restricted until 6 weeks post-op
  • Swelling: gradual improvement over 4–8 weeks; final shape becomes apparent over 3–4 months
  • Full activity: typically cleared at the 6-week follow-up appointment

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?
It may be. Insurers typically require documentation of physical symptoms such as neck or back pain, evidence that conservative treatments (such as physical therapy or custom bra fittings) have been attempted, and confirmation that a minimum amount of tissue will be removed. Our team assists patients with gathering and submitting the required documentation to support insurance claims.
What physical symptoms can breast reduction relieve?
Breast reduction commonly relieves chronic neck pain, upper and lower back pain, shoulder pain and grooving from bra straps, skin rashes or infections beneath the breast fold, postural problems caused by forward breast weight, and difficulty exercising. Many patients report significant improvement in quality of life within weeks of surgery.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast reduction?
Breastfeeding may be affected following breast reduction. Dr. Aker uses nipple-sparing techniques designed to preserve milk ducts and nipple nerve supply, but breastfeeding ability cannot be guaranteed after any breast surgery that involves tissue removal. If future breastfeeding is a priority, discuss this with Dr. Aker before scheduling.
How much tissue is removed in a breast reduction?
The amount of tissue removed is highly individualized. It can range from approximately 200 grams per side for modest reductions to more than 1,000 grams per side in larger reductions. Dr. Aker discusses your target size, relief of symptoms, and proportional goals during the consultation to determine the appropriate amount of tissue to remove.
Will I have scars from breast reduction?
Yes. Breast reduction requires either a lollipop or anchor incision pattern, depending on how much tissue is removed. These scars are permanent but soften and fade significantly over 12 to 18 months. Dr. Aker uses careful closure techniques and will provide scar care instructions to help minimize visibility over time.
